Home is a longing that can never be realized by those who have given themselves to the sea. The waterfront bars are mere agents performing the sea's will against any seaman who transgresses. For those who try to realize their dream of home, there is only a more terrible voyage waiting. Olson has saved up all his strength and sea-pay for the journey.
